We’ve all been there. You and your significant other plan a cute, outdoor date and then, BAM, the forecast changes on you and now you’re left wondering, “what activity can we do indoors on a [insert type of weather here] day?” Funny you should ask.
Where I’m from, weather changes in an instant. Texas loves throwing curveballs and making your life, let’s say, “interesting.” And so I’ve learned how to manage and I’ve gotten more creative because of it! If you’re looking for a DIY date night idea, then look no further because in this article I share 9 options for you and your boo.

1. Have A Bake Night
First on the list of 9 creative date ideas is bake night! This one is really fun especially when it’s cold and rainy outside or even snowing because it can both warm up your place and your hearts at the same time (yes, I went there). In the past, I’ve used recipes that I know taste good without much effort like almond butter banana cookies, sweet potato brownies and blueberry almond oatmeal cups, but obviously you could try more advanced recipes like fancy macarons or even pain au chocolate (chocolate croissant).

2. Draw Portraits Of One Another
I highly recommend this one because it’s guaranteed to make you laugh (unless one of you is actually an artist). If you look around on YouTube you’ll find quite a few videos that guide you on the process of drawing someone, but I found that Yong Chen does the best job explaining. He has an entire playlist dedicated to portraits as well as many other playlists for watercolor painting lessons, and even lessons on painting landscapes.

3. Dance The Day Or Night Away
So, I actually never really saw this done before I did it with my husband, but the thought came to me after remembering pre-covid times and going out dancing (we were really into it). Specifically in the west coast swing dance community, it’s really common to see dance floors with mood lighting that is blue-ish or violet-ish which got me thinking, “can I buy those color-specific light bulbs somewhere and just replace the light bulbs in my lamps with them?” The answer is yes! So I went over to my local Home Depot, found both blue light bulbs and violet light bulbs, replaced my lamp’s light bulbs, put some Spotify on and we were groovin’.

4. Make An Indoor Time Capsule
Have you ever created a time capsule? No? Well, this is one of the best free date ideas you could probably do with your S.O. on a rainy, chilly, snowy night in. You can do it in 5 easy steps:
- Give each other 30 min. to gather around 3 or so items each that you cherish, make you smile, or remind you of something special
- Write notes about what each item means to you and tie it or stick it to the item (fun add-in: a polaroid of y’all doing it together to put in the capsule)
- Decide what to put the items in. Depending on how big the chosen items are, you could try an adorable trunk, store in a lego block or even just a simple straw box
- Find spot inside where you don’t look often like at the back of a closet or maybe under the bed
- Lastly, you’ll have to decide when to open it. You could do it in 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, a year or more if you’d like!

5. Enjoy Some Live Music
Yes, you heard it right! You can enjoy music from the comfort of your own home. Just check out Airbnb experiences and you’ll find tango concerts, classic piano and a cello meditation session. Before joining, maybe even make a quick charcuterie board or just grab a pizza before sitting back, relaxing while the music takes you to another part of the world.

6. Read
Well, it could sound boring, but taking the time to read the books you’ve just let sit and collect dust could actually be the break your eyes and mind have been looking for. If you don’t have books laying around, consider checking one out virtually from your public library!

7. Binge A Funny Show
I had to list this as one because it’s the perfect activity to do on a gloomy day. Check out Netflix for shows like New Girl or head over to Hulu to laugh your head off with Modern Family. Obviously, you could also watch movie! Either way, make sure you’re stocked up with popcorn, Buncha Crunch (so good with popcorn), and maybe some ice cream (or nice cream if you’re into that).

8. Take The 5 Love Languages Quiz
If you haven’t already, take the time to get to understand each other even better by exploring how you give and receive love. Afterwards, explore how to start incorporating what you learned into daily life!

9. Dress Up & Take Photos
Even though it’s probably rainy outside it doesn’t mean you can’t have a photoshoot! Change into some casual or fancy clothes and then take out that old digital camera of yours (or just your phone) to grab some cute photos of each around your place. Snap a photo with your houseplants, your favorite mug, or your pup! You’ll end up creating some great memories.
